Whether you thought about this earlier or not, dog crate training is very important part of the usual training regimen. Crate can become a safe and comfortable place for your dog, but you need to choose a correct one. But why someone will want to place his\her dog in a crate?
The reason for dog crate training is quite obvious. It will provide your dog with sense of security and protection. Why? Before dogs were domesticated (around 15000 years ago) they were living in dens. In fact, they still do. Dens protect dogs from danger and bad weather conditions, and dens are quite warm inside. Naturally, dogs will always keep their puppies inside too. And what's really interesting - dog mother will train the puppies to go to the toilet outside the den, and that shows how important is the den to dogs.
Dog crate training will help to prevent destructive behavior in your dogs, because instead of scratching/nibbling your furniture (when they are anxious), the dog will come back to his den to seek calm. And even this small aspect should be enough to start dog crate training - it's a win-win for both parties.
Another positive effect of dog crate training is a routine. That means your dog will get accustomed with schedule and will sleep in the crate at night, and maybe when you are not home. He will learn this quickly, and chances are that you are going to sleep, waking up and going to work at almost the same time every day.
Very important factor for dog crate training is age of your dog. Very young puppies (younger than 12 weeks) and very old dogs can't hold their bladder properly, so you should consider that before putting then in the crate. So make sure they will not pee in the crate because this will destroy the whole purpose of crate training. They surely don't want to sleep in the messy crate.
Another aspect of dog crate training is not using the crate for punishment purposes. It should be a great and happy place for your dog. And if you will use it for punishment it will surely cause some destructive behavior issues.
And you should know how to choose a proper crate for your pet. They come in various shapes, sizes and materials, but which one will be the best for your dog? General advice is to get a cage that allows your dog to stand up and turn around without problems. But it shouldn't be too spacious, dogs prefer cozy dens. Also if travel a lot you might buy a light-weight crate for easier handling.
Putting the crate in correct place is another important decision. Dogs prefer to spend their time where the family is, because they are social creatures, and they don't like loneliness. So you can get 2 crates and place them in different spots, to keep your dog in sight.
And if you decided that dog crate training will be good for you and your pet just follow the advice listed here.
